Digital Enhanced Cordless Telecommunications (DECT), is a radio standard for short-range cordless communications that operates at 1.9 GHz. Until 1995, the DECT was known as known as Digital European Cordless Telephone, ETSI standard for digital portable phones. Initially DECT phone were not allowed in US. In 2005 the Federal Communications Commission changed channelization and licensing costs in a nearby band (1920 MHz–1930 MHz, or 1.9 GHz), known as Unlicensed Personal Communications Services (UPCS). The DECT in US is termed as DECT 6.0 to distinguish them from DECT devices used elsewhere. The DECT channel are reserved exclusively for voice communication applications and therefore are less likely to experience interference from other wireless devices such as baby monitors and wireless network. The radio channel in DECT system can be divided into frequency as well as time providing 2 x 12 channels.
The base stations as well as hand sets are allowed to transmit maximum power of 250 mW. Normally a handset radiates an average of about 10 mW during a call as it is only using one of 24 time slots to transmit.
